How do I get my first provisional driving licence?

You need an application form D1 available at the Post Office. Send it completed with two passport-sized photos to the DVLA Swansea with some form of acceptable ID (like a passport) and the fee of £50.

What do I need to bring for my first driving Lesson?

You need to bring your driving licence. Comfortable clothes, soft rather than hard shoes and glasses if you wear them. Also I recommend you bring a drink with you.

Do I need to pass the theory test before I can start learning to drive?

No, you can start driving lessons and learn the theory at the same time. There is a lot to learn though so I recommend you get started as soon as possible and try and do half an hour, or whatever you can a day (you will soon realise how much you have learnt).

How many lesson will it take to pass the test?

The Driving Standards Agency tells us candidates take around 40 hours of professional driving lessons with a driving school Instructor to stand the best chance of passing their driving test.

Once you have reached a reasonable level of driving I highly recommend driving with family or a trusted friend (they must have held a full licence for three years and be 21 or older) but this can be discussed at the time.

Where will I take the test?

The nearest test centres are in Lancing and Burgess Hill.

How much do the tests cost?

The Theory test costs £23 and the Practical test is currently £62.

How long does the driving test last?

The test lasts 35-40 minutes.

What car will I use on the test?

Usually in the driving school car you learned in.

After I pass my test how soon can I drive?

As soon as you have the appropriate insurance.
